Terms of Service

These Terms are written to explain the rules for using Barrier in plain language. They are not a substitute for legal advice.

1. Acceptance of these Terms

These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of Barrier, including our website, mobile app, product scanning, ingredient information, fit scores, Skin Score, routine and journal features, watchlists, the Barrier Expert assistant, and related services. By using Barrier, you agree to these Terms.

If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use Barrier.

2. What Barrier does

Barrier helps you organize and understand cosmetic skincare information. It resolves products you scan or search, reads ingredient lists, scores how a product compares against a profile you saved, tracks routines and daily notes, records optional photos, and monitors selected product variants for restock and price movement.

Barrier is an informational and organizational tool for cosmetic wellness. It is a decision-support product, not an authority. It does not guarantee that a product is safe for you, that a score is correct, that an ingredient list is complete or current, that a price or stock signal is accurate, or that using Barrier will improve your skin.

3. Not medical advice, and not a medical device

Barrier is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent any disease, condition, allergy, sensitivity, or injury. It does not perform a medical assessment of your skin and does not tell you whether something is medically safe for you.

Nothing in Barrier — including fit scores, Skin Score, ingredient concern flags, routine suggestions, product comparisons, watchlist alerts, or anything the Barrier Expert assistant says — is medical, dermatological, allergy, nutritional, pharmaceutical, or other professional advice.

Always consult a qualified clinician about your skin, especially if you have a diagnosed condition, a known allergy or sensitivity, broken or irritated skin, are pregnant or nursing, are treating a minor, or are using prescription products. Never delay or disregard professional medical advice because of something you read in Barrier. If you think you are having a medical emergency or a serious reaction, contact emergency services or a clinician immediately.

4. Fit scores, Skin Score, and other generated signals

Fit scores, dimension breakdowns, concern flags, verdicts, Skin Score values, trend lines, and similar outputs are automated estimates. They are generated by software from the profile you entered, the routine and products you saved, ingredient data of varying quality, and — where you provide them — optional photos.

A fit score describes a modelled comparison against the preferences you stated. It is not a safety rating, not an allergy screen, not a dermatological assessment, and not a prediction of how your skin will react. A high score does not mean a product is safe for you. A low score does not mean a product is harmful. The same product can suit one person and irritate another.

Skin Score and any trend shown alongside it are cosmetic observations derived in part from photos you chose to add. Lighting, camera, angle, makeup, screen calibration, and time of day all affect them. They are not a clinical measurement of skin health and should not be treated as one.

You are solely responsible for deciding what to put on your skin. Patch test new products, read the manufacturer’s own label and warnings, and stop using anything that causes a reaction.

5. Barrier Expert and other AI features

Barrier Expert is an AI assistant. It runs on third-party large language models, can act on your behalf within the app to search the product catalog, read ingredient lists, and consult the profile, routine, check-ins, shelf, and watchlist you saved, and it can review a photo you explicitly attach.

AI output is probabilistic and can be wrong. It may be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated, internally inconsistent, or confidently mistaken. It may misread an ingredient list, miss an interaction, cite a product or source incorrectly, or produce a statement that sounds authoritative and is not true. It may miss something important about your skin.

Barrier Expert does not diagnose. It is instructed not to name or rule out a medical condition, but you should not rely on it to identify, exclude, or evaluate one, and no instruction to a language model is guaranteed to hold in every case.

You are responsible for reviewing AI output before acting on it. Do not rely on Barrier Expert for any decision where being wrong could harm you. Verify anything that matters against the product label and a qualified professional.

AI features may be limited, rate-limited, changed, or withdrawn at any time. Conversations may be processed by our AI and moderation providers as described in our Privacy Policy.

6. Ingredient, product, and retailer information

Product records, ingredient lists, claims, certifications, prices, and availability come from a mix of our own catalog, publicly available sources, brand and retailer information, and automated research. This information can be incomplete, out of date, mismatched to the exact variant you hold, or simply wrong.

Formulations change without notice and packaging is not always updated at the same time. The label on the product in your hand is authoritative — Barrier is not.

Price, stock, and restock signals reflect what supported retailers appeared to show at the time of a check. They are a preview, not an offer, a quote, or a guarantee of availability. We are not a seller, do not process retail purchases, and are not responsible for any transaction you make with a retailer or brand.

Brand names, product names, retailer names, and logos are the property of their respective owners. Their appearance in Barrier is for identification only and does not imply affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement in either direction.

7. Accounts and eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use Barrier, and old enough to consent to these Terms where you live. Barrier is not directed to children.

You are responsible for keeping your account information accurate, for protecting your device and login credentials, and for activity that occurs through your account.

8. Subscriptions and payment

Some Barrier features may require a paid subscription. If you purchase through the Apple App Store or another app marketplace, billing, renewals, cancellations, and refunds are handled by that marketplace under its terms. If we process payment directly, the terms shown at checkout apply.

Unless stated otherwise, subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. You are responsible for cancelling before renewal if you do not want to continue.

9. Acceptable use

You agree not to misuse Barrier, interfere with the service, reverse engineer non-public parts of it, bypass access controls, scrape or bulk-export our catalog or ingredient data without permission, or use Barrier for unlawful, deceptive, harmful, or abusive activity.

You agree not to use Barrier or its AI features to provide medical advice to other people, to build a competing dataset, or to generate content that infringes rights, contains malware, or violates law.

You agree not to upload photos of anyone other than yourself without their permission, and not to upload images of a minor.

10. Your content

You may submit photos, notes, product details, routines, preferences, saved items, and other information. You retain ownership of what you submit.

You grant Barrier a limited licence to host, store, process, transmit, analyze, and display that content as needed to operate, secure, and support the service for you — including sending what is necessary to the AI and infrastructure providers described in our Privacy Policy.

11. Third-party services

Barrier relies on third parties for authentication, hosting, storage, AI processing, content moderation, and app distribution. Barrier is not affiliated with or endorsed by any brand or retailer referenced in the app unless we say so. Third-party services may be delayed, unavailable, or change without notice.

12. Intellectual property

Barrier, including our software, design, scoring methodology, catalog, interfaces, text, graphics, logos, and related content, is owned by Barrier or our licensors and protected by intellectual property laws.

These Terms do not give you ownership of Barrier. We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable right to use Barrier for your own personal, non-commercial skincare use, subject to these Terms.

13. Service changes and availability

We may add, change, pause, or remove features at any time, including scoring methodology, catalog coverage, and AI capabilities. Scores and other outputs may change as our data or methods change. We may suspend or limit access where needed for security, maintenance, legal compliance, or to protect Barrier and its users.

We do not guarantee that Barrier will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times.

14. Disclaimers

Barrier is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy, and availability, and any warranties arising from course of dealing or usage of trade.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we make no warranty that any score, verdict, concern flag, ingredient record, Skin Score, trend, price, availability signal, or AI response is accurate, complete, current, suitable for you, or free from error, and no warranty that using Barrier will produce any particular result for your skin.

You assume all risk arising from products you buy or apply, reactions or irritation you experience, routines you follow or change, purchases you make from any retailer, and decisions you make in reliance on anything Barrier shows you.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of these exclusions may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

15. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Barrier and its owners, employees, contractors, suppliers, and affiliates will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost goodwill, or business interruption.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any personal injury, skin reaction, irritation, allergic response, worsening of a condition, cost of treatment, or property damage arising from a product you chose to use, a routine you chose to follow, or reliance on any score, ingredient record, or AI response in Barrier.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim related to Barrier will not exceed the amount you paid us for the service during the three months before the event giving rise to the claim, or $100 if you have not paid us.

16. Indemnity

You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Barrier and its owners, employees, contractors, suppliers, and affiliates from claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses arising from your use of Barrier, your content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of law or third-party rights.

17. Termination

You may stop using Barrier at any time and can delete your account from inside the app — see Data Deletion. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these Terms or create legal, security, or operational risk.

Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnity.

18. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. You and Barrier agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Delaware for any dispute not subject to another agreed process, except where applicable law gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts.

19. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If changes are material, we will take reasonable steps to notify you, such as updating the effective date, posting notice in the service, or sending a message where appropriate. Continued use after updated Terms take effect means you accept them.
